Exploring Minecraft - Day Five

Posted on 11/01/2010 by Trambapoline

I've gotten a few messages asking if I managed to get bored of Minecraft so early on, since there hasn't been an update in a few days. Nah, it's just that I've had a lot of studying and general running around to do, and when I have gotten time to myself it's mostly been spent in World of Warcraft. You know, that other giant, addictive waste of time and energy. In any case, here's another post!

There's a YouTube video at the end showing off my base, if you just want to skip the crap and see what I've built. In any case, I've got an original base system to work my way back to!

- MINECRAFT -
Day Five: Da-Da-Dadada-HEY! Da-Da-Dada..

In the time I've had between posts, I've been finishing up on the fortress. The last building to be constructed? The defense tower that I'll most likely completely forget about when the Creepers and Zombies finally do bother to friggin' show up.

It's been far too quite for a past few nights....

At last. She is completed!

I started planting some trees around the outside to help add s'more colour. Also, to stop skeletons flinging so many damn arrows at my face.

Welcome to Donk Base! Station X, because if I gave it a number I'd be terribly confused when I got back to my original area and had to start continuing on with the numbers. My brain-meats can only handle so much!

And here's Entrance #2~

And here's the base and bay area from up above. Despite the blocky nature of the game, it actually looks surprisingly scenic and nice from up here! When I was over-looking the area from here I first noticed that sink-hole in the ocean on the left-hand side of the image. I have no idea if it was always there, but I decided to investigate!

Doesn't look like a natural formation. Possibly the crater left behind from a Creeper explosion?

In any case, there seemed to be a hole at the bottom, which might lead back to the Motherlode. Also, home!

And the Sun was setting..

Well, I know where I'm headed then!

Man, this thing is pretty goddamn deep..

A created a nice little pocket of air where the hole suddenly ended, and decided to keep digging down myself. There had to be something down here, surely!

I've swum a long way down.

When I finally hit the unbreakable level of Adminium at the bottom of the world, I discovered a tunnel when I built my air-pocket. Could it lead back to the Motherlode?

Sadly, it did not. However, I did discover some Redstone Dust, which is what I needed to build a Compass.

Score!

Also, Diamond when building my tunnel back up to the surface. Sweet!

Ah, fresh air!

I hope the tunnel entrance/exit isn't too far away from Donk Base. I don't particularly feel like being lost again.

Huh. That's.. uncharacteristically convenient.

*quack*

Oh, Mr. Pluckster! Who is actually a Chicken, I'm told, but fuck it. You're a lovable duck to me!

Just smelting some Iron needed to create ingots~

Many thanks to people for letting me know how the darn to make a compass!

What a compass does, if I haven't explained it already, is it points to your spawn point, regardless of distance traveled. Whenever it's in your little Action Bar on the bottom of the screen the red marker will move about, so you never lose your bearings. I thought I'd point this out since the compass is too small to easily see with my screenshot sizes, so I've copy/pasta'd the originally sized one onto the resized images below.

Could've just said that from the start, but I like being unnecessarily long-winded!

Right! I probably won't start the trek home just yet, but knowing which direction to head towards will be a fantastic start. Hopefully it's only a few hill climbs and a day cycle's travel away. Onwards, Mr. Red Pointy Thing!

Oh, please don't tell me it's going where I think it is..

Well, fuck.

*sigh* Now what?

Annnnnnnnnnnnd here's the base!
